Where records live
Where the records of a piece of land are kept, sorted by Dr. Bob Zybach’s 19 types of information (from his 1999 thesis, p. 18). The pilot area is Polk and Benton counties, Oregon; the national sources work anywhere in the 30 public-land states. Every link was tried once on October 5, 2026; the few official sites that turned our checker away are marked.
Your township’s survey records (Oregon and Washington)
BLM’s Oregon/Washington office has one page per township listing its plats, field-note books and historical index. Type your township and range to get the address. Nothing is looked up; this just builds the link.
Changed recently
- BLM’s General Land Office Records moved to a new site on July 13, 2026: glorecords.blm.gov/s/. Old saved search links now land on the new front page.
- Polk County began charging for online deed copies on September 1, 2026: each document is bought by card and mailed, or by subscription.
- Benton County shows only the name index online; deed images come by request or in person.
- The Century Farm & Ranch program’s old website is gone. Use the OSU database or the Oregon Farm Bureau page.
- Chronicling America moved to loc.gov/collections/chronicling-america.
